Heat could have played role in death of child found dead in car in Spartanburg, coroner says
Police are responding to N. Lanford Road in Spartanburg.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. —
The coroner says heat could have played a role in the death of a foster child found in a car Wednesday night in Spartanburg County.

Police said they were called to a home just before 6 p.m. on North Lanford Road.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said a 3-year-old boy was found dead in a car.

Clevenger said a preliminary investigation autopsy revealed the boy's death to be heat-related.

He said he doesn't know how long the child was in the car unsupervised, but it could have been multiple hours.

Clevenger said the child was in foster care and the caregiver watches multiple children.

The name of the child will not be released until the parents can be notified.

“Any time there’s a loss of a child, it’s just a very tragic event no matter if it’s by natural means or by accident or by some other means,” he said.
