Sheriff investigating death of 2-year-old found in hot car in Scranton, Kansas

A 2-year-old child died after being found unresponsive Sunday afternoon inside a hot car in Scranton in northern Osage County, said Sheriff Chris Wells. Authorities were investigating.

The name and gender of the child hadn't been made public as of Monday.

The child apparently "got into the car" instead of being left there, Wells said.

He said law enforcement officers and emergency responders were called about 3:40 p.m. Sunday to a home in Scranton, for which the address wasn't being made public.

The child was taken from the scene to Topeka's Stormont Vail Health, where the child was pronounced deceased, Wells said.

The National Weather Service at 4 p.m. Sunday recorded a temperature of 90 degrees and a heat index of 101 at Topeka, about 23 miles north of Scranton.
